Frequently Asked Questions
Download and install Freedom Tracker β€” no credit card needed. You get full access to every feature for 7 days. After the trial ends, the app locks and prompts you to purchase a license key to continue. Your data is never deleted.
The app locks and shows an activation screen. Purchase a license at myfreedomtracker.com, enter your key, and you're back in immediately β€” all your data intact.
Never. Freedom Tracker is 100% local and offline. Your portfolio data lives only on your computer. We have no servers, no accounts, and no cloud sync β€” your data is yours alone.
Yes. Freedom Tracker runs on Windows 10 & 11 and macOS 12 (Monterey) and later. The Mac app is signed and notarized by Apple β€” download the Mac DMG, open it, and drag Freedom Tracker into Applications.
You can import holdings via CSV from E*TRADE, Webull, Fidelity, Schwab, and most major brokers. Manual entry is also supported for any holding or ticker.
Freedom Tracker prices every holding from live market data by its ticker symbol, so there isn’t a separate cash line. If your cash sits in a money-market fund or short-term Treasury fund at your broker (many brokerages sweep idle cash into one automatically), add that fund by its ticker like any other holding and enter the share count from your statement β€” Freedom Tracker will value it and track the monthly income it pays. Cash that isn’t held in a tickered fund can’t be tracked as a holding, since there’s no symbol for the app to price.
The Playground lets you model hypothetical portfolios without touching your real holdings. Type in any ticker and allocation, see projected annual income, a Freedom Score, and your path to financial independence β€” all in real time.
The Builder projects your future dividend income from recurring contributions. Set an amount and schedule, pick your funds and a time horizon, and it compounds reinvested distributions month by month to estimate where you'll land β€” with a growth curve and a conservative rate assumption by default. Projections are estimates, not guarantees.
Because we offer a full-featured 7-day free trial, we don't offer refunds on paid licenses. Use the trial to make sure Freedom Tracker is right for you before purchasing. Questions before you buy? Email support@myfreedomtracker.com.
One-time. It's a $49 lifetime license β€” pay once and it's yours forever, with no subscription, no renewals, and no auto-billing. We hate subscriptions too. Every update to this version is included free.
🏦 Brokerage Import Questions
The most common cause is that the action words in your broker's CSV aren't recognized. Check the red "Skipped row X:" messages in the preview β€” they show the exact word the importer couldn't classify (e.g., "Market Buy", "Dividend Payment", "Stock Transfer").

Try these fixes in order:
1. Select your specific brokerage from the dropdown instead of Auto-detect.
2. If your broker isn't in the list, try a similar one (e.g., TD Ameritrade transactions often work with the Schwab profile since the merger).
3. If neither works, report the unrecognised action word and we'll add it in the next update.
These are two completely different things:

πŸ“₯ Import CSV reads Freedom Tracker's own backup format (the file you exported with "πŸ“€ Export CSV"). Use this to restore a portfolio backup or move your data between computers.

🏦 Import Broker reads your brokerage's transaction export (Schwab, Fidelity, Robinhood, etc.). Use this to bring in your real transaction history from your broker. This is the one you almost certainly want.
Yes β€” try Auto-detect first. Freedom Tracker recognizes a wide range of column name variations (Date, Symbol, Action, Quantity, Price, Amount) across hundreds of brokerage layouts. It works for many unlisted brokers automatically.

If Auto-detect skips most rows, open the CSV in a spreadsheet program to see the exact column names and action words. Then submit a bug report with that information and we'll add native support for your broker.
Freedom Tracker accepts standard US ticker symbols (letters, numbers, dots, and dashes). Some brokerages export Berkshire Hathaway as BRK/B with a forward slash, which is flagged as invalid.

The fix: after your import, manually add BRK.B (with a dot) using the quick-add form at the top of the screen, and enter those purchases by hand. Most brokers use BRK.B which imports without issue.
No. Freedom Tracker automatically detects duplicates before importing. Each transaction is checked against what's already in your portfolio by matching date + ticker + type + quantity. If the same transaction already exists, it's counted as a duplicate and skipped β€” not added again. The preview screen shows how many duplicates were found.

Re-importing an old file to "catch up" is completely safe.
Interactive Brokers' "Activity Statement" CSV contains multiple sections (Trades, Dividends, Fees, etc.), each with its own header row. Freedom Tracker reads from the first header it finds, so only one section imports at a time.

The solution: in IBKR's report settings, generate separate CSV exports for Trades and for Dividends, then import each file individually. This gives you clean results for both transaction types.
No β€” pick one approach, not both.

Freedom Tracker's DRIP toggle rebuilds reinvestment history from scratch using Yahoo Finance's dividend history. It calculates how many shares you'd have accumulated if every dividend was reinvested at the ex-dividend price.

Broker DRIP transactions imported from CSV are recorded as real buy transactions (shares added to your buys list).

If you do both, the DRIP toggle will calculate reinvestment on top of the already-imported shares, resulting in double-counted shares and inflated income numbers.

Recommendation: Enable the DRIP toggle (automatic, Yahoo-based) and skip the DRIP rows from your broker import. Or import the broker DRIP rows and leave the toggle off. Either works β€” just not both.
The income figures are based on Yahoo Finance's dividend history. This shows $0 when:

1. Yahoo Finance is temporarily unavailable. Press F5 to refresh. If prices load but income is still $0, the dividend data wasn't returned.

2. The ticker symbol doesn't match Yahoo's symbol. For example, some ETFs trade under a slightly different symbol on Yahoo than on your brokerage. Check finance.yahoo.com to confirm the exact symbol.

3. No dividends were paid in the last 12 months. If a fund recently cut its dividend, the trailing 12-month figure will be zero or very low.

4. You own the shares as of today but with a future purchase date. Make sure the date you entered is the actual past purchase date, not a future date.
πŸ’Ύ Your Data
Your portfolio is stored in a file called freedom_portfolio.json β€” entirely on your computer. Nothing is ever sent to a server.

By default it lives in C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\FreedomTracker\ on Windows (or the data folder you chose in the app). The easiest way to see exactly where your files live: open the Your Data screen inside Freedom Tracker (v7.5+) β€” it shows the full path.

The quickest way to create a portable backup: use πŸ“€ Export CSV from the toolbar β€” it saves everything (holdings, transactions, settings) to a CSV file you can store anywhere.
Recent versions (v7.2+) include Undo for your last change, and Freedom Tracker keeps automatic rolling backups you can restore in one click from inside the app. If you need to go further back, restore a backup:

If you used "πŸ“€ Export CSV" before the deletion: Click "πŸ“₯ Import CSV" and select your backup file. Your full portfolio is restored.

If you have a copy of freedom_portfolio.json: Replace the current file in the app's folder with your backup copy, then restart Freedom Tracker.

If you have no backup: The data is gone. We recommend exporting a backup after any major changes. Going forward, consider a quick weekly export to a cloud folder.
Yes. One license covers all computers you personally own. To use your portfolio on both machines:

1. Export your portfolio on machine A using πŸ“€ Export CSV.
2. Copy the file to machine B (USB drive, email, cloud storage β€” any method works).
3. On machine B, use πŸ“₯ Import CSV to load it.

Note: changes made on one computer don't sync automatically to the other. Export from whichever machine you last updated and import on the other to stay current.
Freedom Tracker fetches live prices from Yahoo Finance. If prices show "β€”":

1. Check your internet connection. Press F5 to retry.
2. Yahoo Finance may be temporarily slow or down. This happens occasionally β€” try again in a few minutes.
3. A firewall or VPN may be blocking the connection. Try disabling your VPN temporarily.

Your portfolio data is unaffected β€” prices are fetched on demand and not required for the app to open. Income projections update as soon as prices load successfully.
